Where to Buy a Teacup Chihuahua, and Where to Find One You Can Trust

Teacup Chihuahuas are one of the most searched-for puppies in the country, and one of the most faked. We raise them in our home, and this is the advice we would give a friend, even one who ends up buying somewhere else.

By Twin Cities Chihuahuas, a family Chihuahua breeder based in Minneapolis. Updated October 30, 2026.

The best place to buy a teacup Chihuahua is from the breeder who raised it: someone whose home you can visit, whose puppy's mother you can meet, and who shows you the puppy's weight records, contract and health guarantee before you pay. Pet stores, brokers and ship-only sellers rarely can. We are a home breeder, and we would rather a family drive or wait a few weeks than pay a stranger for a puppy they cannot see.

Where Can I Find a Teacup Chihuahua? The Six Kinds of Seller

Nearly every teacup listing you find comes from one of these sources. What separates them is not the photos, which all look sweet, but what the seller can prove.

Where to find a teacup Chihuahua and what each kind of seller can usually show you

Rescue gets less credit than it deserves. Chihuahuas are common in shelters, and an adult shows you its final size and personality on the first day. If you want a puppy whose start you can trace from birth, a breeder is where to get a teacup Chihuahua.

Where to Get a Teacup Chihuahua Near You, and When to Look Further

Searching "teacup chihuahua near me" is a fair start. The trouble is that search results reward whoever buys ads or posts most, not whoever raises puppies best. Treat distance as the last filter, not the first. A breeder three hours away who lets you visit, publishes the contract and hands the puppy over in person beats a seller ten minutes away who wants to meet in a parking lot.

Wherever you live, ask how the puppy will reach you before you ask about anything else. For families within a day's drive of us, pickup at our home is the simplest route. For families across the rest of the country, from Oregon to New York, one of us flies with the puppy in the airplane cabin from MSP and hands it over at your nearest major airport, so the puppy is never out of a familiar person's sight. A breeder who can only offer cargo or a stranger in a van is telling you how much they think about a 1.5 pound puppy's first day away from home.

Five Questions to Ask Any Teacup Chihuahua Seller

  1. May I visit, or will you hand the puppy over in person? A seller with nothing to hide says yes to one or the other.
  2. What did the mother and father weigh as adults? You want numbers in pounds, not "tiny".
  3. Can I see the puppy's weight log? A breeder who tracks size has records.
  4. Can I read the contract and health guarantee now? Before any money moves, not after.
  5. How will the puppy travel? A 1.5 pound puppy alone in cargo or on a transport van is stressed at the age it is most prone to low blood sugar.

Warning Signs That End the Conversation

  • Payment only by gift card, wire, crypto or a payment app to someone you have never met.
  • New fees after you pay, such as crate rental, "insurance" or a vaccine certificate.
  • A promised adult weight under 2 pounds, or an upcharge for "micro" or "pocket".
  • Photos that appear on other websites; a reverse image search takes a minute.
  • A teacup offered at 6 or 7 weeks, or at 8 weeks with no feeding plan.
  • Pressure to decide today because other buyers are "waiting".

Our guide to avoiding Chihuahua puppy scams walks through the most common tricks we hear about from families.

Decide Coat and Size Before You Start Searching

Buyers who know what they want are much harder to rush. Two choices narrow the field fast. First, size: teacup size (projected 3 to 4 lbs) or toy size (4 to 6 lbs), which is sturdier and easier for a first-time owner. Second, coat. A smooth coat is easy to groom but needs a jacket for every walk in a cold winter; a long coat sheds in seasonal bursts and looks bigger for its weight. Our smooth coat Chihuahua puppies page explains what living with the short coat is like.

What Should Be in Your Hands Before You Pay the Balance

  • The puppy and its mother, seen in person or at an in-person handover.
  • The weight log and both parents' adult weights.
  • A vet record naming the clinic, with vaccines and deworming dated.
  • Registration details you can confirm with the registry yourself.
  • A signed contract and written health guarantee.
  • A feeding plan for the first two weeks.

How Families Buy a Teacup Chihuahua From Us

We are a family home breeder. We raise Chihuahuas only, every puppy is born and weighed daily in our home, and we never resell puppies bred by anyone else.

  1. Apply. Our adoption application is free, and we will contact you within 24 hours.
  2. Get matched. We talk through your household and suggest a current puppy or an upcoming litter. A deposit holds a puppy under our written deposit policy.
  3. Wait for readiness. Puppies go home at 8 to 10 weeks; teacup size puppies usually stay until 10 to 12 weeks, when they eat confidently alone.
  4. Bring your puppy home. Pickup by appointment at our home, an in-cabin flight with one of us from MSP to your airport, or someone you trust collects. Never cargo, never a hired transporter.

Each puppy leaves with a vet check, vaccines for its age, deworming, a microchip, AKC paperwork, a written 1-year genetic health guarantee, starter food, Nutri-Cal or glucose gel, its weight log and a blanket that smells of its littermates. Our teacup Chihuahua price guide breaks down what that costs and why.

Bringing a Teacup Home in Winter

If you live somewhere with real winters, plan pickup or airport handover day around the cold. Warm the car first, line the carrier with a blanket, and time the drive so the puppy eats just before you leave and again soon after you arrive. A chilled puppy burns sugar quickly, and the first evening in a new home is when we want it eating best.

Our Opinion: Buy the Breeder, Not the Photo

Puppy photos are the least reliable thing on any listing. They can be borrowed, staged or months old. The breeder is what you are really buying: their records, their contract, and whether they answer when you have a worried question in week two. That is the standard we try to meet as Twin Cities Chihuahuas, for families nearby and across the country. When you are ready to look, our teacup Chihuahua puppies for sale show each puppy's age, current weight and projected adult size.

Questions About Buying a Teacup Chihuahua

Where can I buy a teacup Chihuahua?

Buy from the breeder who raised the puppy, somewhere you can meet the mother, see the puppy's weight records and read the contract and health guarantee before paying. Pet stores, brokers and ship-only websites rarely offer those. If no good breeder is close, one who hands the puppy over in person is safer than a nearby seller who keeps the mother out of sight.

How do I find a teacup Chihuahua near me?

Start with Chihuahua breeders in your state, then test each one. Can you visit by appointment? Is the price on the listing? Is the contract published? Will they give both parents' adult weights in pounds? If nobody local passes those checks, a breeder further away who delivers the puppy in person is a better choice than a closer seller who fails them.

Is it safe to buy a teacup Chihuahua online?

Finding a breeder online is normal. Paying a stranger for a puppy you never see before it arrives is where people get hurt. Most Chihuahua puppy scams use websites and social media with stolen photos. Meet the puppy in person, at the breeder's home or at an in-person handover, and never pay by gift card, wire transfer or crypto.

Can I get a teacup Chihuahua from a breeder in another state?

Yes. With us, families can pick up by appointment at our home, send someone they trust to collect, or have one of us fly with the puppy in the airplane cabin from MSP and hand it over in person at their airport. Our puppies never travel as cargo and are never handed to a hired transporter.

What should come with a teacup Chihuahua puppy?

At minimum, a vet record showing the vet check, vaccines for its age and deworming, registration paperwork you can verify, a written contract and health guarantee, and a feeding plan. Ours also go home with a microchip, starter food, Nutri-Cal or glucose gel, the daily weight log we keep from birth and a blanket carrying the litter's scent.
