Chihuahua Puppy Questions Families Ask Before They Apply
We are a family Chihuahua breeder based in Minneapolis, and our puppies go home to families across the country. These are the questions those families ask us before they bring a Chihuahua puppy home, answered the way we answer them on the phone. If yours is not here, send us a message and we will contact you within 24 hours.
Before You Apply for a Chihuahua Puppy
Most of the questions we get boil down to one: is this the right dog for our house? A Chihuahua is a long-lived toy breed, often 14 years or more, and the smallest ones need regular meals and protection from falls. We ask about your schedule, children and other pets on the application for that reason, not to screen you out. Our honest view is that the right size matters more than the right color. A family with a toddler or a busy workday is usually happier with a toy size puppy than a teacup.
Have a few things ready before go-home day: a small crate or carrier, puppy pads, a soft bed and a vet appointment booked for the first week. Keep feeding the food we send home for at least the first two weeks, and keep the Nutri-Cal or glucose gel where everyone in the house can find it. Our new Chihuahua puppy checklist lists the rest.
Visiting Us, or Choosing From a Distance
Visits are by appointment, Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.. We share our address once a visit is booked. When you come, you will see where the litter lives, meet the mother and usually watch a feeding. Please do not visit another litter or a dog park on the same day; very young puppies have not finished their vaccines. Most families live too far to visit, and that is normal. Call (646) 463-2052 or email contact@twincitieschihuahuas.com and we will go through the puppy's weight log, its parents' adult weights and its records with you, the same conversation we would have in our kitchen.
Caring for a Chihuahua Puppy Wherever You Live
A Chihuahua is an indoor dog in any climate. In cold states it needs a fitted coat and short trips outside; in hot ones it needs shade, water and walks kept to the cooler hours, because a dog this small heats up and chills down fast. The first weeks matter most: small frequent meals, a warm bed and a steady potty routine. Our Chihuahua potty training schedule and our guide to low blood sugar in Chihuahua puppies cover the two things new owners ask us about most. Most cities also require a dog license once the rabies vaccine is done, so check with yours.

The Six Questions We Hear Most
How much does a Chihuahua puppy cost from a home breeder?
Every puppy we raise is $700, teacup or toy size, long coat or smooth, male or female. There are no upcharges for color or size. That price includes the vet check, vaccines for age, deworming, microchip, registration papers, starter food and our written 1-year genetic health guarantee.
How big will my Chihuahua puppy get?
We give every puppy an estimate based on both parents' adult weights and its own daily weight log. Teacup size means a projected adult of 3 to 4 lbs; toy size means 4 to 6 lbs. It is an estimate, not a guarantee, and littermates can finish half a pound apart. We never promise an adult under 2 pounds.
What age do Chihuahua puppies go home?
Ours go home at 8 to 10 weeks. Teacup size puppies usually stay with us until 10 to 12 weeks, until they eat confidently on their own and hold their weight between meals. We would rather keep a small puppy two extra weeks than send it to a new house before it can manage without us.
Do you ship Chihuahua puppies?
Never as cargo, and never with a hired transporter. Wherever you live in the USA, you can pick up at our home by appointment, send someone you trust, or have one of us fly with the puppy in the airplane cabin and hand it to you in person at your nearest major airport. Our delivery page explains how a flight works.
Are your puppies registered and health guaranteed?
Yes. Every litter is AKC registered, and the paperwork goes home with the puppy. Each puppy also comes with a written 1-year genetic health guarantee. Pet puppies are placed on a spay and neuter agreement written into our puppy contract, which you can read before you commit to anything.
How do I reserve a Chihuahua puppy?
Start with the free adoption application. We read every one ourselves and contact you within 24 hours. Once we agree on a puppy, a deposit holds it under our written deposit policy. We never ask for payment by gift card, cryptocurrency or a wire to someone you have not spoken with.
