We are Twin Cities Chihuahuas, a family breeder based in Minneapolis, and our long coat puppies are born and raised in our house before going home to families across the country. Below are the long haired Chihuahuas we have available right now, each with its price, current weight and estimated adult size. At 8 weeks they are only a little fluffier than their smooth littermates. The feathered ears and plumed tail come later.

Every long coat puppy we raise is born in our house, and every one is $700, whatever its size, coat or color. What does differ is how big we expect it to be as an adult and when it is ready to leave. We weigh each puppy every day from birth, and that weight log, together with the adult weights of both parents, is how we arrive at the estimate you see on each listing. It is an estimate. Nobody can guarantee the adult weight of a Chihuahua, and we never promise an adult under 2 lbs.
| Size | Projected adult weight | Price | Usual go-home age |
|---|---|---|---|
| Teacup size long coat | 3 to 4 lbs | $700 | 10 to 12 weeks |
| Toy size long coat | 4 to 6 lbs | $700 | 8 to 10 weeks |
Teacup size puppies stay with us longer because they need to eat confidently on their own before they travel. A long coat makes a tiny puppy look bigger than it is, so read the weight on the listing rather than judging by the photo. A fluffy 1 lb puppy and a sleek 1 lb puppy are the same dog under the hair.
Families who buy a long coated Chihuahua for sale sometimes message us at four months worried that the coat has not come in. It has not, yet. The adult coat arrives on its own schedule, and the soft puppy fluff you take home is not the coat you will see at two.
| Age | What the coat looks like |
|---|---|
| 8 to 12 weeks | Soft fluff, slightly longer on the ears and tail |
| 4 to 8 months | First real ear fringe, the chest begins to fill |
| 10 to 14 months | Puppy coat sheds out, often a thin and awkward stage |
| 18 months to 2 years | Full coat: feathered ears, ruff, trousers and a plumed tail |
Coat color can also shift as the adult hair comes through. White and cream long coats tend to hold their color well, while fawn often deepens a shade. If you have your heart set on a white long haired Chihuahua for sale, ask us how the parents' coats changed with age. We can tell you what we have seen in our own dogs.
A fluffy Chihuahua is less work than it looks. Two short brushing sessions a week keep the coat free of tangles. Spend most of the time behind the ears and in the armpits, where the hair is finest. Bathe once a month or when the dog has rolled in something.
Winter is where long coat owners in snowy states earn their keep. Road salt, sand and slush cling to the feathering on the legs and to the hair between the toes. After every walk, wipe the feet and belly with a warm damp cloth and dry them. Trim the hair level with the paw pads every few weeks so ice cannot ball up between the toes. The coat helps a little with the cold, but a 4 lb dog standing in snow still chills fast, so a coat that covers the chest goes on below about 40 degrees. In hot climates the job is the reverse: brush out the loose undercoat in spring so the coat breathes, and never shave a long coat, because the hair shields the skin from sun. Our Chihuahua cold weather care guide lists the temperatures and gear we use with our own dogs.
Long and smooth coats are the same breed, with the same temperament and the same size range, and both can come out of one litter. For a family in a cold-winter state who will be walking the dog outside from November to March, we lean slightly toward the long coat. The extra hair buys a few more minutes outdoors, and the shedding comes in two seasonal bursts rather than a steady daily drift. The cost is brushing and salty feet. If you would rather never pick up a brush, look at our short haired Chihuahua puppies instead. Neither coat suits people with dog allergies, since both shed.
If you searched for long haired Chihuahua breeders near me, distance matters less than you might think. Wherever you live in the USA, one of us can fly with your puppy in the airplane cabin and hand it to you in person at your nearest major airport. If you are within driving distance, you can collect your puppy from our home by appointment and meet the mother, or send someone you trust to collect. We never ship a puppy as cargo and never use a hired transporter. The details are on our Chihuahua puppy delivery page.
Every long coat puppy goes home with a vet check, vaccines and deworming for its age, a microchip, AKC paperwork, a written 1-year genetic health guarantee, starter food, Nutri-Cal or glucose gel, its weight log and a blanket that smells of the litter.
Long coats do not appear in every litter, and they tend to be reserved quickly. If none are listed above, browse every puppy on our teacup Chihuahua puppies for sale page, or send the free puppy application and tell us you want a long coat. Families on the waitlist hear about new litters first. You can also read more about our Chihuahua breeding program before you apply. We will contact you within 24 hours.
Later than most people expect. At 8 weeks a long coat puppy has soft fluff and a hint of fringe on the ears. The ear feathering and chest ruff fill in from roughly 4 to 10 months, and the full adult coat usually arrives between 18 months and 2 years. A patchy stage around the first birthday is normal.
Better than smooth coats, but still not cold weather dogs. The long hair sits over a thin undercoat and the belly is nearly bare, so a long coat Chihuahua still needs a sweater or lined coat outside once it drops below about 40 degrees. Keep January potty trips short and wipe salt off the feet afterward.
Not from us. Every puppy we raise is $700, teacup or toy size, long coat or smooth, boy or girl. A seller who adds a fee for long hair or for a smaller puppy is charging for something that costs nothing extra to breed. One flat price also means you can choose on temperament instead of on budget.
Twice a week is enough for most dogs, five minutes each time. Use a pin brush over the body and a fine metal comb behind the ears and under the front legs, where tangles start. Bathe about once a month. Trim the hair between the paw pads every few weeks so snow and salt cannot ball up there.
Yes. The long coat gene is recessive, so two smooth parents that both carry it can produce long coat puppies. Two long coat parents, on the other hand, can only produce long coats. That is why a single litter in our home can hold both coats, and why we cannot promise a long coat before a litter is born.
