We are a family Chihuahua breeder in Minneapolis, and South Dakota families reach us two ways. East River families mostly drive across the prairie and collect at our home. West River families usually meet one of us at the airport, after a flight with the puppy riding in the cabin beside us.
Any puppy below can go home to South Dakota, by pickup or by flight. The table gives coat, age and projected adult weight for each.

The Missouri River is a good dividing line for us. East of it, a drive to our home is a long day most families handle well. West of it, the drive is far too long for a small puppy, so we fly instead.
Times are approximate for dry roads. Flights to smaller airports change from season to season, so we confirm a route with you before anything is booked.
When we fly, the puppy rides in a soft carrier under the seat in front of us and is handed to you in person just outside security. We never ship puppies as cargo and never use a hired transporter. You can also send someone you trust to collect at our home. Our in-cabin delivery page explains the health certificate and how the day runs.
Sioux Falls families can choose the flight too, though most find the drive simple enough. For Rapid City, we will say it plainly: eighteen hours of round trip across open prairie is hard on you and harder on a puppy that weighs two or three pounds.
| Where you live | Approximate drive | If we fly instead |
|---|---|---|
| Brookings | About 3 hours 15 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes | Usually not needed |
| Watertown | About 3 hours 30 minutes | Usually not needed |
| Sioux Falls | About 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours | Sioux Falls Regional Airport |
| Huron | About 4 hours 15 minutes | Sioux Falls, or ask us |
| Aberdeen | About 4 hours 30 minutes | Aberdeen Regional Airport, schedule permitting |
| Mitchell and Yankton | About 4 hours 30 minutes | Sioux Falls Regional Airport |
| Pierre | About 6 hours | We check the route with you |
| Rapid City and the Black Hills | About 8 hours 45 minutes to 9 hours | Rapid City Regional Airport |
South Dakota has a small number of breeders who focus on Chihuahuas, and families often end up comparing a handful of listings hundreds of miles apart. Ask each one: can I see where the puppies sleep, do you breed only Chihuahuas, and are the puppies your own or bought in? Our answers: in our home, yes, and always our own. From the first morning, we weigh every puppy daily and send the log home with it.
In early August, the Sturgis motorcycle rally fills I-90, the Black Hills and Rapid City flights, and we would rather not bring a puppy into that crowd. Pick another week for a Rapid City delivery.
In mid-October, the pheasant opener sends hunters and trucks onto every highway around Huron, Mitchell and Aberdeen, and motels fill up. Neither is dangerous, but a new puppy deserves a quiet trip, and moving the date a week costs you nothing.
In winter, wind lifts loose snow off the fields and across I-90 and I-29 in a ground blizzard, sometimes under a clear sky, and the interstates can close in bad storms. Check the 511 reports for both states. In summer, keep the carrier shaded from the prairie sun.
The puppy eats shortly before it leaves us. Stop once, around Mankato or Marshall, and offer a few bites inside the car, out of the wind. Keep the Nutri-Cal or glucose gel in your pocket for any sign of wobbliness.

Teacup size puppies usually stay with us until 10 to 12 weeks, until they eat confidently on their own, so they travel with more in reserve.
There are a few, and it is worth visiting any you find. Many South Dakota families also come to us. We are a family Chihuahua breeder about three and a half hours from Brookings, and we raise every puppy in our home. Our current puppies are on the available puppies page.
About three and a half to four hours by car, depending on whether you go east on I-90 and up through Mankato or north on I-29 and across through Marshall. It is a long but realistic day trip in good weather. Leave early, collect your puppy around midday and stop once on the way home.
Yes, and for the Black Hills it is what we recommend. One of us flies with the puppy in the airplane cabin from MSP, under the seat in front of us, and hands it to you just outside security at Rapid City Regional Airport. Rapid City typically has flights from MSP. The puppy never travels as cargo.
Every puppy we raise is $700, whether it is teacup size or toy size, long coat or smooth. There is no extra charge for living in South Dakota if you collect at our home. The price includes the vet check, vaccines for age, deworming, microchip, registration papers and our written genetic health guarantee.
Many do. Sioux Falls and Rapid City set their own rules, and a current rabies vaccination is usually part of licensing. Your puppy will be too young for the rabies vaccine when it comes home, so ask your vet about timing, then check your city or county requirements and fees before any deadline.
