We are Twin Cities Chihuahuas, a family that breeds only Chihuahuas, and our puppies grow up in our home in Minneapolis. They go home to Rochester apartments, Iron Range farmhouses and lake places near Brainerd. Most Minnesota families drive over and collect; the far north can meet one of us at the airport instead.
These are the puppies in our house today. The table below them shows age, coat and the adult weight we expect, so you can compare at a glance before you apply.

Minnesota is a long state. A family in Mankato can collect a puppy over a long lunch break, while a family in International Falls faces most of a day on the road each way.
The times in the table are approximate, for dry roads and ordinary traffic. Add a third in January. For the far north, one of us can fly with the puppy in the airplane cabin from MSP to a regional airport that has a flight from Minneapolis, and hand it to you in person. Schedules to the smaller airports change, so we check the route with you first. We never ship a puppy as cargo.
| Where you live | Approximate drive | What we usually suggest |
|---|---|---|
| St. Cloud | About 1 hour 10 minutes | Pickup, no stop needed |
| Mankato | About 1 hour 20 minutes | Pickup |
| Rochester | About 1 hour 30 minutes | Pickup |
| Winona | About 2 hours 15 minutes | Pickup, one short stop |
| Brainerd and the lakes | About 2 hours 15 minutes | Pickup, one short stop |
| Duluth | About 2 hours 30 minutes | Pickup, or the cabin flight in deep winter |
| Marshall and Worthington | About 2 hours 45 minutes to 3 hours | Midday pickup, home before dark |
| Moorhead | About 3 hours 30 minutes | Pickup, two people in the car |
| Bemidji | About 3 hours 45 minutes | Drive in good weather, fly otherwise |
| International Falls and Grand Marais | About 4 hours 15 minutes to 5 hours | Ask us about flying or an overnight |
Every part of the state brings its own small differences for a puppy this size: wind on the southern prairie, lake air up north, salt on every city sidewalk. Here is where our families live, and what we tell each of them.
Every Minnesotan knows it: a drive from Duluth that takes two and a half hours in June can take five in blowing snow, and rural two-lane highways at dusk bring deer as well as ice. Our rule is simple. If either of us does not like the forecast for your route, the pickup moves. Nobody loses their puppy over a snowstorm.
Weather also shapes the first months at home. North of Brainerd, a run of days below zero is normal. Set up an indoor potty spot with pads before the first cold snap and keep outings to a minute or two. Our winter care guide for Minnesota Chihuahuas covers coats, salt and how cold is too cold.
This is the mistake we see most from Minnesota families in summer. They collect a puppy on Friday and head straight up north for the weekend. Please do not. A puppy that has just left its litter needs the same room, the same bed and the same meal times for its first two weeks, plus a vet visit.
Add a long drive, a new building, a dock and the neighbor's Lab, and you have a stressed puppy that skips meals. Small Chihuahuas cannot afford to skip meals; our guide to low blood sugar in Chihuahua puppies explains why. Plan the first cabin weekend for week three.
Minnesota licenses commercial dog breeders above a set number of breeding dogs and litters through the Board of Animal Health. That license tells you a kennel is inspected. It does not tell you how puppies are raised. These are the answers you should get from any breeder, and the ones you get from us:
Puppies go home at 8 to 10 weeks. Teacup size puppies, projected at 3 to 4 lbs as adults, usually stay with us until 10 to 12 weeks, until they eat confidently on their own. For a family facing a three hour drive from Bemidji or Worthington, those extra weeks matter more than anything else on this list. You can read more about our Minneapolis Chihuahua breeding program on our home page.

Dog licenses and rabies rules in Minnesota are set mostly by cities and counties, so Rochester, Duluth and a township near Bemidji all differ. Your puppy will be too young for its rabies vaccine at pickup; ask your vet when it is due, then check your city's rules.
Start with breeders you can visit. We raise Chihuahua puppies in our home in Minneapolis, and most of the state can reach us in a day. Our current puppies are listed on the puppies page with age and projected adult size. Be cautious with any Minnesota listing that refuses a visit and only offers shipping.
Yes. We are one: every litter we raise is born in our Minneapolis home, and the puppies sleep a few steps from our kitchen. When you compare Minnesota breeders, ask to see the room where the litter lives, not just photos, and ask how often the puppies are weighed.
Every puppy we raise is $700. Teacup size or toy size, long coat or smooth, male or female, the price is the same. It includes the vet check, vaccines for age, deworming, microchip, registration papers and the written genetic health guarantee. Be wary of Minnesota listings far below that which will not let you visit.
Yes, with planning. Warm the car before you load the puppy, bring a covered carrier and a towel, and carry the puppy from our door straight to the car. If the forecast shows a storm or ice on your route, we move the pickup date. A few days of waiting does a puppy no harm at all.
We suggest waiting about two weeks. A new Chihuahua needs a steady routine, a vet visit and a few days of eating well before it handles a three hour drive and a strange building. Lake water, docks, bigger dogs and wildlife are also real hazards for a two to four pound puppy.
