St. Paul families do not need a road trip to meet our Chihuahua puppies. We breed and raise them in our home in Minneapolis, usually 15 to 30 minutes from your front door, so you can sit with the litter first, collect your puppy on a weekday morning and have it asleep in its own bed before lunch.
Each card shows a puppy in our house right now. The table compares coat, age and the adult weight we expect, and every one of them can be visited before you decide.

The short distance is the best part of buying a Chihuahua puppy as a St. Paul family. Less time in a carrier means less stress and no missed meal on the first day.
Times assume ordinary traffic. Rush hour on I-94 between the two downtowns can double them, so a pickup between about 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. is the calmest choice. The walk spots are for later, once your vet says vaccines are complete; until then, carry the puppy and keep its paws off public ground.
| St. Paul area | Approximate drive | Quiet spot for early walks |
|---|---|---|
| Merriam Park and Mac-Groveland | About 15 to 20 minutes | Mississippi River Boulevard path |
| Highland Park | About 20 minutes | Hidden Falls Regional Park |
| Como and Midway | About 20 minutes | The path around Como Lake |
| Summit Hill and Cathedral Hill | About 20 minutes | Summit Avenue sidewalks |
| Downtown and Lowertown | About 20 to 25 minutes | Harriet Island, across the river |
| Payne-Phalen and the East Side | About 25 to 30 minutes | The Lake Phalen loop |
| Highwood and Battle Creek | About 30 minutes | Battle Creek trails, on leash |
Families flying in from far away often meet us for the first time at the airport. You do not have to. Because you live so close, you can come over by appointment, Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., sit on our floor with the litter, meet the mother and see the room where the puppies sleep. Bring the whole household, including the children who will be handling the puppy. We would rather see a five year old meet a two pound Chihuahua with us there than without us.
That first visit is also when we talk honestly about size. A teacup size puppy is projected at 3 to 4 lbs as an adult, a toy size puppy at 4 to 6 lbs, and both are estimates. For homes with young children we often point families toward toy size, because a slightly sturdier dog copes better with busy hands and dropped toys. Read more about our family Chihuahua breeding program before you come.
Much of St. Paul was built before 1930: duplexes on the East Side, big houses on Summit Avenue, upper units with steep back stairs. Chihuahuas live happily in all of them. Four things to check before the puppy arrives:
St. Paul has good off-leash areas, and we still tell our families not to take a Chihuahua into a mixed off-leash park, at any age. A friendly sixty pound dog at full speed can injure a three pound dog without meaning any harm.
Leashed walks on the river paths and around Como Lake, plus play dates with one or two small, calm dogs you know, give a Chihuahua everything it needs. Wait until vaccines are complete before any of it.
St. Paul requires dogs to be licensed with the city, with proof of rabies vaccination, and households above a certain number of dogs need an extra permit. Check current fees and limits with the city, because they change.
Summer sidewalks along Grand Avenue get hot enough to hurt small paws by midday, so walk early. From November on, salt and de-icer coat every sidewalk in the city; wipe paws after each walk and put a coat on the puppy every time it goes out.
Most St. Paul families find us just across the Mississippi. We raise Chihuahua puppies in our home, usually about 15 to 30 minutes from St. Paul neighborhoods. Every current puppy is listed on our puppies page with its age and projected adult size, and visits are by appointment.
Yes, by appointment, Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Living in St. Paul makes this easy, and we encourage it. You meet the mother, see where the puppies sleep and handle the puppy you are considering. Apply first through the free application so we can talk about the right puppy before you come.
St. Paul licenses dogs through the city, and proof of a current rabies vaccination is part of it. Your puppy will be too young for that vaccine at pickup, so the usual order is vet visit, rabies shot at the age your vet advises, then the license. Fees and deadlines change, so confirm them with the city.
Usually, yes. A Chihuahua needs little floor space and can be fully trained to pads for the coldest days. The two things to plan for are barking at hallway noise and steep shared stairs. Reward calm when doors close, and carry the puppy on stairs until it is several months old.
Every puppy we raise is $700, teacup size or toy size, long coat or smooth. St. Paul families pay nothing extra for pickup, since our home is a short drive away. The price includes the vet check, vaccines for age, deworming, a microchip, registration papers and the written genetic health guarantee.
