Smooth Coat Chihuahua Puppies for Sale: What You Get

Every smooth coat or short hair Chihuahua for sale on this page was born in our house and has never lived anywhere else. We breed Chihuahuas only and do not resell puppies from other breeders. Each puppy is weighed daily from birth, and every one goes home on a spay and neuter agreement as a family pet.

On go-home day your puppy leaves with a vet check, vaccines and deworming for its age, a microchip, its AKC paperwork and a written 1-year genetic health guarantee. We also pack the starter food it already eats, Nutri-Cal or glucose gel, the daily weight log we have kept since birth, and a blanket that smells of its mother and littermates.

Short Hair or Long Hair: How They Compare

Families ask us this more than any other coat question, so here is the side by side we give them on the phone.

Smooth coat and long coat Chihuahuas compared
Smooth coat (short hair)Long coat
GroomingRubber mitt twice a week, no trimmingBrush and comb twice a week, trim the feet
SheddingLight, every day, short stiff hairsTwo heavier seasonal sheds, longer tufts

Temperament and health are the same in both. If the long fringe and plumed tail appeal to you, our long haired Chihuahua puppies page shows what is available in that coat.

Teacup Chihuahua Short Hair: Size and Price

Every puppy we raise is $700, smooth or long coat, teacup or toy size. What differs is the projected adult weight: a teacup size smooth coat is expected to weigh 3 to 4 lbs as an adult, and a toy size puppy 4 to 6 lbs. Those adult weights are estimates built from the parents' weights and our daily weigh-ins, never guarantees, and we never promise an adult under 2 lbs.

A teacup short haired Chihuahua looks smaller than a long coat of the same weight, because there is no fluff to hide the frame. That is useful when you are judging photos. What you see on a smooth coat is very close to the real size of the dog.

Living With a Short Haired Chihuahua

The appeal is easy upkeep. No mats, no tangles behind the ears, no trimming between the toes. A damp cloth takes most dirt off, and a bath once a month keeps the coat shining. Smooth coats also show off color and markings best, so a cream, a fawn and white or a blue merle looks its sharpest on short hair. You can compare shades on our Chihuahua puppies by color page.

The trade is warmth. In our house the smooth coats are the first under a blanket on a November evening, and the ones wearing a sweater when the furnace cycles off at night. Here is what we tell every smooth coat family who lives somewhere with a real winter:

  • Indoors: a covered bed away from doors and windows, plus a light sweater if the house sits below about 68 degrees.
  • Outdoors: a lined coat that covers the chest and belly, not just the back, once it drops below about 45 degrees.
  • Deep cold: potty trips of a minute or two, then straight back inside, with an indoor pad for the worst January days.
  • Paws: paw wax or booties against road salt, and a rinse after every walk.

For the temperature cutoffs we use with our own dogs, read our Chihuahua cold weather care guide. In warm states, the same thin coat means sunburn on pale skin, so keep midday walks short.

Our Advice for First-Time Owners

If this is your first small dog and you live in an apartment or a busy household, we usually suggest a smooth coat. Daily care is simpler, you can see the puppy's body condition at a glance, and you will notice quickly if it looks thin or chilled. That matters most in the first months, when a small Chihuahua puppy needs regular meals and warmth to keep its blood sugar steady.

Short Haired Chihuahua Breeders You Can Visit

Because we are a home breeder, you can meet the mother and see where your puppy grew up. Visits are by appointment, Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.. If you live too far to drive, one of us can fly with your puppy in the airplane cabin and hand it to you at your nearest major airport. Read more about Twin Cities Chihuahuas, our home breeding program, see every puppy on our teacup Chihuahua puppies for sale page, or send the free puppy application and tell us you would like a smooth coat. We will contact you within 24 hours.

Smooth Coat Chihuahua Questions

Do short haired Chihuahuas shed a lot?

More than the short hair suggests. A smooth coat Chihuahua sheds a little every day, with heavier spells in spring and fall. The hairs are short and stiff, so they work into couch fabric and dark clothing. Two minutes with a rubber grooming mitt twice a week pulls most of the loose hair out before it lands on your furniture.

Are smooth coat Chihuahuas warm enough in winter?

Indoors, yes, with a covered bed and a light sweater if your house runs cool. Outdoors, often no. A smooth coat has nothing between its skin and the wind, so anywhere with real winters it needs a lined coat that covers the chest and belly, and winter potty trips should be quick.

Is a teacup short haired Chihuahua more delicate than a long coat?

Coat has nothing to do with it. Delicacy comes from size. A teacup size smooth coat, projected at 3 to 4 lbs as an adult, needs the same careful feeding and handling as a teacup size long coat. The only practical difference is warmth: the smooth coat feels the cold sooner, so keep it out of drafts.

How often should you bathe a smooth coat Chihuahua?

About once a month. Bathing more often strips the oils from the skin, and smooth coats show dry, flaky skin quickly in a heated house during winter. Use a mild dog shampoo, rinse thoroughly and towel the dog completely dry before it goes near a cold floor or the back door.

Can a smooth coat puppy come from long coat parents?

No. The long coat gene is recessive, so two long coat parents can only produce long coat puppies. Two smooth parents can produce either coat if both carry the long gene. That is why we can only confirm each puppy's coat a few weeks after birth, once the fringe on the ears does or does not appear.
