Your route north

Iowa to Our Home: Drive Times and Halfway Stops

Central Iowa has a straight interstate run north through Ames, Clear Lake and Albert Lea. Northeast Iowa comes up through Rochester instead, and northwest Iowa crosses the prairie through Fairmont or Mankato.

Drive times are approximate and assume dry roads. At the halfway stop, stay in the car with the engine running and the puppy in its carrier on your lap. Offer a few bites of the starter food and a little water. Do not set the puppy down on a rest area lawn; every dog that has passed through has left something behind, and your puppy's vaccines are not finished yet.

Chihuahua Breeders Iowa Families Compare Us With

Iowa licenses commercial breeders through the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship. If you visit breeders in Iowa, ask about that license and ask to see where the puppies live day to day. Then ask us the same questions. We are not an Iowa kennel but a family home breeder, and this is what we hand every Iowa family at pickup:

  • 1A folder with the vet check, the vaccine and deworming record and the microchip number.
  • 2Registration papers and the written 1-year genetic health guarantee.
  • 3The daily weight log, kept every morning since the day your puppy was born.
  • 4A bag of starter food, so the diet does not change on the drive south.
  • 5Nutri-Cal or glucose gel and a blanket that still smells of the litter.

Put the gel in your jacket pocket. If the puppy turns limp or wobbly rather than simply sleepy, a little on the gums and a stop until it perks up is the right response. Our guide to low blood sugar in Chihuahua puppies explains why tiny puppies need it. Teacup size puppies, projected at 3 to 4 lbs, usually stay with us until 10 to 12 weeks, which makes a four hour ride far safer.

Where Our Iowa Families Come From

Every corner of Iowa has its own best route and its own quirks. A quick guide to each.

Central Iowa

  • Des Moines, Ankeny and West Des Moines: leave by 8, home by late afternoon
  • Ames: about three and a quarter hours, one stop at Albert Lea
  • Mason City and Clear Lake: a two hour run, no stop needed

Northeast Iowa

  • Decorah and the Driftless: north through Rochester, about three hours
  • Waterloo and Cedar Falls: about three and a half hours

Eastern Iowa

  • Cedar Rapids and Iowa City: drive, or meet us at the Cedar Rapids airport
  • Dubuque and the Quad Cities: usually better served by the flight

Northwest Iowa

  • Spirit Lake and Okoboji: across the prairie through Mankato
  • Sioux City: about four and a quarter hours, stop at Fairmont
Our advice

Iowa Pickup Advice: Drive From Des Moines, Mind the Season

From Des Moines, We Say Drive

We offer the in-cabin flight from MSP to Iowa airports, and for some families it is the right call. For most of central Iowa we still recommend the drive. Three and a half hours is a long morning, not an ordeal, and coming to us lets you see the mother, the room where your puppy grew up and the scale we weigh it on every day.

You also get our twenty minute walkthrough on feeding and warning signs face to face. Save the flight for families in Dubuque, the Quad Cities or anyone who truly cannot get away.

Every Iowa Season Has a Catch

From September to November, combines and grain trucks crawl along the two-lane highways that feed the interstate, so leave thirty minutes of slack. Winter on open farmland means drifting snow across the lanes and more freezing rain than families a few hours north usually see.

July and August bring heat, thick humidity and sudden lines of severe storms. A closed car on an Iowa summer afternoon heats up in minutes, so the puppy never waits alone in a parked car. If your day looks bad, we pick another one together.

Iowa Families Ask Us

Are there chihuahua breeders in Iowa?

Yes, Iowa has Chihuahua breeders, and the state licenses commercial breeders through its agriculture department. Many Iowa families also look north to us. We raise Chihuahua puppies in our home in Minnesota, about two hours from Mason City and three and a half from Des Moines, and we breed Chihuahuas only.

How long is the drive from Des Moines to pick up a puppy?

Plan on about three and a half to four hours each way, plus one stop on the way home. Most Des Moines families leave by 8 a.m., collect their puppy before noon and are home by late afternoon. Construction season and winter storms add time, so check the road reports before you set out.

Does Iowa require a rabies shot for a new puppy?

Iowa generally requires dogs to be vaccinated against rabies by about six months of age, and many Iowa cities also require a dog license. Your puppy will be too young for the rabies vaccine at pickup, so your vet will schedule it. Check your own city's license rules and fees after that visit.

Can you fly a Chihuahua puppy to Des Moines or Cedar Rapids?

Yes, when a family cannot make the drive. One of us flies with the puppy in the airplane cabin from MSP and hands it to you in person at the airport, just outside security. Des Moines and Cedar Rapids typically have flights from MSP. We never ship puppies as cargo or use a hired transporter.

What does a Chihuahua puppy cost for Iowa families?

Every puppy we raise is $700, teacup or toy size, long coat or smooth, male or female. Iowa families pay the same as anyone else. The price includes the vet check, vaccines for age, deworming, a microchip, registration papers, the written genetic health guarantee, starter food and Nutri-Cal or glucose gel for the ride home.
